Central Theme

When Jesus is king, everything we have becomes available to him, including the spiritual gift he has given each of us. Our greatest impact comes from offering what he has already placed in us, not from trying to be someone else.

Key Takeaways

  • Three questions move you from wanting Jesus as king to living it. What do I know God is asking me to do? What do I believe God is calling me to? How has he gifted me? Start with what is already clear, not the big picture.
  • Every follower of Jesus has a spiritual gift, and it flows from grace. begins “in view of God’s mercy,” so the gift is a response to grace, not a way to earn it. A spiritual gift is a Spirit-given capacity to spiritually impact the world around you and build up the body in a way that is out of proportion to your natural ability.
  • Different doesn’t mean less. In the foot cannot say it doesn’t belong because it isn’t a hand, and the parts that seem weaker are the ones the body can’t do without. We are gifted differently and unequally, and Jesus only asks what we did with what he gave us. The body grows “as each part does its work” ().

Message Review

Watch the messageMaximizing Your Capability · YouTube

Three weeks into Uncapped, we’re still asking a new question: what am I capable of for the kingdom? After last week’s call to make Jesus king, we looked at what it takes to live that out, using three questions. What do I know God is asking me to do? What do I believe God is calling me to? How has he gifted me? The first is the least mysterious, because Scripture already makes a lot clear: forgive, give, serve, share, stay in community. The second is about the nudges we sense, and learning to test them without letting the testing become a way to delay.

Then we spent most of our time on the third. In , the author starts with God’s mercy before he ever mentions gifts, so our gifts are a response to grace, not a way to earn it. Every follower of Jesus has been given one, a Spirit-given capacity to impact the world around you and build up the body in a way that is out of proportion to your natural ability. reminded us that different doesn’t mean less. We’re gifted differently and unequally, and the parts that seem weakest are the ones we can’t do without. showed us the body grows as each part does its work. So comparison has no place here. You’re not asked to be someone else, only to offer what God has placed in you.

Discussion Questions

Pick the questions that fit your group tonight. You do not have to cover them all. How the questions work.

A Gift You Didn’t Ask For

Tonight is about the gifts God gives. Let’s start with the everyday kind.

What’s a gift you received that you didn’t ask for but turned out to be something amazing or something you use every day?

Clip 8:21 When you follow Jesus, you’re forgiven and adopted, and you’re also given a gift. It makes a good bridge out of the icebreaker.

Each Part Does Its Work

Read together.

The author pictures the church as a body that grows “as each part does its work.” Not the most visible parts. Not the professionals. Each part. A church made only of leaders would have seventeen visions and nobody stacking the chairs.

When have you seen a group come alive because everyone pitched in?

Clip 21:54 When all of us bring our gifts, we grow up into Christ together.

Alternative question

Think about a group you’ve been in where one person carried everything. What was that like?

Mercy Comes First

Read together.

The author of Romans opens verse 1 with “in view of God’s mercy.” The offering comes after the mercy, not before it. It’s easy to flip that order without noticing.

When have you caught yourself serving to earn something, like approval or a sense of being enough?

Clip 10:11 Romans turns from what Jesus has done to how we respond to it.

Alternative question

Think about a time you served someone purely out of gratitude. What was different about it?

Obedience isn’t the price of grace. It’s the response to it.

What changes when you serve because you’re already loved, not so you’ll be loved?

Alternative questions

What would look different about how you serve if you did it because of grace, not to earn approval?

Where would serving look different for you if it came from gratitude instead of wanting approval?

Different Isn’t Less

Read together.

The author pictures a foot looking at a hand and deciding it doesn’t belong. Before we get to what he says about that, let’s be honest about what comparison does in us.

Think about the last time you compared yourself to someone. What happened in you?

Clip 18:05 We’re gifted differently and unequally, and asking what you’re capable of gets you out of the comparison game.

Alternative questions

Who do you find yourself comparing yourself to most?

When has comparing yourself to someone pushed you to grow?

We aren’t gifted the same, and we aren’t gifted equally. But Jesus won’t ask why you weren’t someone else. He’ll ask what you did with what he gave you.

The Parts We Can’t Do Without

In verse 22, the author says the parts of the body that seem weakest are the ones we can’t do without. Not tolerated, not included to be nice. Every gift matters, no matter how small or hidden it feels. Say yours out loud tonight so this group can help you pick it back up.

What’s something you feel called to do that you’ve slowly stopped being intentional with?

Clip 19:58 Even if you can’t do what someone else can, God says the body can’t do without you.

Prayer Focus

If there's time, start by sharing prayer requests. If you're short on time, start a text thread to collect them.

  • For grace. Ask God to settle in each person that they’re already loved, so whatever they offer this week comes from that and not from trying to earn it.
  • For freedom. Pray against the comparison that tells people they have less to offer. Ask God to help each person see their part as one the body can’t do without, not a smaller one.
  • For sight. Ask God to show each person how he has gifted them, and to help this group notice it in each other.
  • For follow-through. Take what each person named in the last question and pray it back by name. Ask for one faithful step this week, and for the group to help carry it.

Next Week

We ended on a question we haven’t answered yet. If every one of us has been given a gift, how do you find yours? Next week we take it on. The early church didn’t have gift tests or personality quizzes, so how did they know? The answer is simpler than a test, and it turns out you won’t find it from the outside. We’ll also circle back to the first two questions and ask where we might still be saying no. Catch the message this weekend, “Structure for Success,” and come ready to talk about where you fit.
