Leader Note

This is the first series we’ve wrapped up since groups launched this fall, so here’s a habit I (Nick) have shared before and still use with my own group. At the end of every series, I ask two questions. What’s the one thing you’ll remember from this series? And what’s the next step you’re working on because of it, and how can we support you?

The first one shows you what stuck. The second gives your group something to follow up on. If you’d like a full plan for the night, Reflecting on the Series walks you through it.

It’s also a good moment to check in on the group itself. Is anyone missing that you should reach out to? Does the day and time still work? Is there anything you want to do differently in the next series?

Central Theme

We all put artificial caps on what God can do. We take them off by asking God to reveal where we’ve capped Him, asking Him to lead, and then following, not by striving harder.

This wraps up Uncapped, but not the question. What am I capable of for the kingdom is something we get to keep asking all year.

Key Takeaways

  • There are three kinds of caps.
    • I don’t want to. Like Moses saying “Please send someone else” ().
    • I don’t think God can. Like the spies who saw giants, while Caleb said “we can certainly do it” ().
    • I can’t see it. Like Peter, who heard “the ends of the earth” (), and God still had to show him what that meant ().
  • Faithfulness multiplies beyond what we can see. One faithful person who keeps showing up can shape lives they’ll never fully know about. That builds on last week’s point about consistency.
  • Ask God to reveal, ask Him to lead, then follow. Where am I saying no? Where am I not believing? What can’t I see? Where do You want me to lean in? That takes making room to listen, not just talk.

Message Review

Watch the messageTake the CAPS Off · YouTube

Last week we talked about training. This weekend we wrapped up Uncapped with the thing that gets in the way of all of it: we put caps on what God can do. It usually happens one of three ways.

  • I don’t want to. God offered Moses the very thing he’d wanted his whole life, freedom for Israel, and Moses said, “Please send someone else” ().
  • I don’t think God can. Twelve spies saw the promised land, ten saw giants, and only Caleb said, “We can certainly do it.”
  • I can’t see it. Jesus told His followers they’d reach the ends of the earth, and Peter still had to see a vision before he understood that meant everyone.

So how do we take the caps off? The same way every time. We ask God to show us where we’ve capped Him. We ask Him where He wants us to lean in. Then we follow. There’s no system that answers this for us, because God won’t give us the answer apart from Him. He cares more about knowing us than about us having the answer. That means making room to listen, not just talk. The series is over, but the question isn’t: where have I capped God, and where does He want me to lean in?

Discussion Questions

Pick the questions that fit your group tonight. You do not have to cover them all. How the questions work.

Grown Up Plans

As kids, nobody tells us what’s impossible, so we dream big. Somewhere along the way we start putting limits on what we think can happen. Let’s go back to before the limits, and see how close anyone got.

When you were a kid, what did you think you’d be when you grew up?

Clip 2:36 Nobody wants to look back and realize they lived a smaller life than God made them for.

Send Someone Else

Read together.

Moses had wanted his people free his whole life. When God finally said “go,” Moses wasn’t short on ability. He just didn’t want to, and he said it plainly: “Please send someone else.”

What’s one thing you keep hoping God will hand to someone else?

Clip 8:08 Moses was the most qualified person in Israel. He just didn’t want to do it.

Giants in the Land

Read together.

Twelve spies saw the same land. Ten saw giants and said, “We can’t attack those people.” Caleb saw the same giants and said, “We can certainly do it.”

When has a situation looked so big that you stopped expecting God to do anything about it?

Clip 10:36 When we cap God, it doesn’t just affect us. It affects the people around us too.

Out of Reach

Sometimes the cap isn’t on what God can do through us. It’s on who we think He can reach. A family member, an old friend, a coworker we stopped praying for a long time ago. You don’t have to share a name.

Who is someone you’ve stopped believing God could reach?

Clip 20:37 Sometimes people aren’t saying no to God. We’re saying no for them.

Three Caps

Read together.

Jesus had told His followers they would reach “the ends of the earth” (). Peter still thought that meant Jewish people, until God sent him to a Roman family and showed him it meant everyone. That’s the third cap: I can’t see it.

Which of sounds most like you right now?

Clip 14:09 Jesus said “the ends of the earth,” and Peter still couldn’t picture that it meant everyone.

Quiet Space

The message ended with silence. Instead of talking at God, we gave Him room to speak. A few questions to bring into that space: Where am I saying no? Where am I not believing? What can’t I see?

When this week could you set aside ten quiet minutes to ask God where you’ve capped Him? Who in this group can check in with you on it?

Clip 30:30 Why do we talk so much instead of giving God a chance to talk?

Prayer Focus

If there's time, start by sharing prayer requests. If you're short on time, start a text thread to collect them.

  • For sight. Ask God to show each person where they’ve put a cap on Him, even the ones they can’t see yet.
  • For faith. Pray for the person each of us thought of tonight, that God would reach them in ways we stopped expecting.
  • For willingness. Ask God to soften the places where we’ve said “send someone else,” and give us courage to say yes.
  • For stillness. Pray that each person finds those ten quiet minutes this week, and hears from God in them.
For leadersAfter groupNext steps this week
  • Check in midweek on the quiet minutes. A quick text on Wednesday, like “Did you find your ten minutes?”, is the check-in question 6 promised.
  • Write down the next steps people named. Ask about them again in a few weeks, once the next series is going. That’s what turns a series people heard into a series that changed something.
